PLACE VALUE-PHASE 3 OF 3-HOW YOU CAN ASSIST YOUR CHILD?

PHASE 3
You are in PHASE 3 if your child has successfully passed the written and verbal quiz in PHASE 2.
1.       Teach your child to pronounce ANY number with a decimal CORRECTLY.
a.        For example, 0.537 is NOT pronounced 0 POINT 537 BUT the correct pronunciation is Five-Hundred Thirty Seven Thousandths.

MRS. SANFORD’S COMMENTS:
Too often we get away from CORRECT pronunciation of numbers with decimals.  As a result, when we get older we not only forget the CORRECT pronunciation BUT we FORGET PLACE VALUE.  As a parent you can assist your child by saying ANY number with a decimal CORRECTLY; as a result, the concept will be RETAINED for the LONG –TERM!

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS...???
If not, Thank you for following Golden Rule's PLACE VALUE segment:>).

PLACE VALUE-PHASE 1 OF 3-HOW YOU CAN ASSIST YOUR CHILD?

PLACE VALUE
When assisting your child with retaining PLACE VALUE please follow these EASY steps.

1.       Ask your child what PREFIX is to the RIGHT of the Decimal?
2.       Ask your child what PREFIX is to the LEFT of the Decimal?
3.       Next, Quiz your child on the first TWO STEPS to ensure that they have a solid foundation of PLACE VALUE PREFIX which simultaneously helps with preventing the WRONG answer response.
4.       Next, provide your child a PLACE VALUE CHART like the one below.  Make up your own examples and allow your child to use the PLACE VALUE CHART to communicate to you the PLACE of each number. BUT FIRST ASK IS 5 TO THE RIGHT OR TO THE LEFT OF THE DECIMAL?  If your child answers to the right, they immediately remember the PREFIX THS. For example, 0.53
a.       Is ZERO to the RIGHT or the LEFT of the Decimal? A correct response would be 0 is to the LEFT of the decimal with the S SOUND-0 = Ones Place
b.      Is FIVE to the RIGHT or the LEFT of the Decimal? A correct response would be 5 is to the RIGHT of the decimal with the THS SOUND -5 = Tenths Place
c.       Is THREE to the RIGHT or the LEFT of the Decimal? A correct response would be 0 is to the RIGHT of the decimal with the THS SOUND- 3 = Hundredths Place
5.       Next, allow your child the opportunity to MEMORIZE the PLACE VALUE CHART.  Depending on your child’s memory this may take 30 minutes or it may take a couple of days.

STAY TUNED FOR PHASE 2 TOMORROW...............

TO BE THE BEST YOU MUST ………….?

Parents and Students I hope that you enjoyed your Holiday Break!!!  It is now the 3rd QUARTER and it is time to kick it up a notch!!!  How can you do this immediately??

1.      Make sure that your child has reviewed all material from the 1st semester especially if your child will be taking the CRCT OR another STATE PROFICIENCY TEST to be promoted to the next grade!!!
2.    If your child does not spend at least 1 hour studying a core subject like math or science daily this MUST come to a HALT!!!  Take a break from the cell phones, Television, Game Systems like PS3, X Box etc..    For example, I actually had a parent ask me how can they make their child study because all they want to do is PLAY their XBOX?  If you are a parent who VALUES EDUCATION…what do you think?  For those of you who know me …you are already aware of my response.:>)
3.     Parents it would behoove you to monitor your child’s progress daily PLEASE DO NOT wait until it is TEST time or REPORT CARD TIME!!
4.    If you know of other students that can benefit from Golden Rule Tutorial Services, please share our information.  Our motto is to live by the Golden Rule…help others and don’t let them struggle too.   It’s kind of like we have to get out of the mode of we don’t want other people to know who our hair stylist or barber is so we don’t share the information for whatever reason…………..WHO DOES THAT….???

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO STUDY BEFORE SCHOOL IS IN!

If you're a student, you're probably not going to study over the holidays (unless you have exams after the break). However, it may be a good idea to spend a bit of time studying and keep your brain active. Here are some practical tips.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • note cards
  • text books
  • motivation
  • determination
  1.
If you have exams after the break, then you know what you need to study. However, the difficulty often lies in finding the time to study when you're spending time with family and friends.

If you're done with your courses and don't have any tests, then here are some additional tips that may help.
  2.
Set a practical goal for yourself. How much time do you want to spend each day studying? It can be chunks of time, broken up throughout the day.
  3.
Identify the topics you want to study. Everything you learned this semester in the subject that is giving you the most challenge.  Are you preparing for the CRCT, SAT, the MCAT, or some other type of standardized exam? Do you have difficult courses next semester?
  4.
Use your note cards and start writing some key points to help you study. Refer to these note cards during mini breaks (like TV commercials, time in the car, etc.)
  5.
Play trivia games like Trivia Pursuit or Cranium. Keep a computer handy. This way, you can look up more information about specific answers.

MORE LINE SEGMENTS, RAYS, AND LINES....

No matter what grade your child is in as a parent you should ask them if they know the difference between a line segment, ray, and line...This is the foundation of Geometry that a typical child learns in the 3rd grade and will use as long as they are in MATH!!:>).  Learn the definition of all 3 and you will be ready for a quiz.  Always remember never write a definition without an example just like you see in this photo.

COASTAL HABITAT 3RD GRADE GOLDEN RULE STUDENT ROCKS!!!

I just had to share this with everyone...with the approval of my student of course:>).  Truly wanting to be engaged in the various things my students are doing outside of the subject they may be getting tutored in has led me to post a photo of an AWESOME science project completed by student and his parent!!  It is soooo nice to hear when parents are still actively involved in their childs' education!!!  Anyway my student, who is in the 3rd grade by the way provided me a brief summary of his project...He has been learning about the 5 habitats and he chose to do the coastal habitat as his Science Project for this particular assignment...Take a look at what he used to create his habitat.  Totally Awesome!!!
I will be sure not to be gone tooo long next time with my post..my apologies but I have learned from my students, my brother, and my other followers that they just want me to SHARE tips, whatever is on my mind, or things that they have done!!:>)  Don't make post an over complicated assignment but keep the F in FUN!!!  Ok now check out this pic.
